Our Beginnings

What an adventure the last few years have been. And what an adventure 2018 is already.


Our Roots

Our family began conceptualizing Saint Tryphon Farm & Vineyards nearly 10 years ago. But it was only in 2013 that the concept began to take flesh. By 2013, we had purchased our land south of Sisterdale and north of Boerne and began erecting high fences in preparation for the vineyard. By this time I also had the good fortune of working with Lewis Dickson of La Cruz de Comal Winery in his vineyard and cellar. His “natural” approach to both vineyard and cellar work were an inspiration to how we wanted to approach our craft: farm cleanly, promote life in the vineyard, and allow Mother Nature to guide your hand in the cellar.

In the winter of 2014, we began taking cuttings from his estate vineyard and propagating them at Saint Tryphon, finally putting our vine babies in the ground in 2016. We also began making wine in 2016 with contracted fruit in the Texas Hill Country and the Texas High Plains.

Flash Forward

Flash forward 1000 more steps, and we bottled and labelled these wines in late 2017 and opened our tasting room doors and our vineyard this month. So many steps, so many self-doubts, so much sacrifice, so much beauty.

Our 9 year old daughter, Anna, has literally been witness to the dream and its fruition her entire life. The day before we opened our doors we were driving to get breakfast tacos in town. Anna said to me, “Dad, after all this time and all your work, it doesn’t feel as exciting as I anticipated to actually be opening tomorrow.”

“You know, Anna, oddly, I feel the same way; it doesn’t feel like I thought it would feel”. To me, the monumental last step of opening our doors seemed so paltry compared to all the work preceding it.

Opening Day

The next day we opened at 11 am. Anna was sitting on the wraparound porch and evidently watching for our first customers. No one was coming. Every 15 minutes or so she would enter the tasting room and dejectedly offer, “Dad, where are the people?”.

“Don’t worry, Anna, people will come; we don’t even have a sign on the road and I haven’t advertised; it is what is called a soft opening.”

Around 12:30 Anna comes bolting across the front yard, and panting bursts into the tasting room. “Dad!”, she exclaims with a mixture of glee and triumph, “Dad, you have customers!!!”

“Well, Anna, I thought you weren’t feeling very excited”. She laughed and went to greet the nice folks.

All of us at Saint Tryphon are equally excited and grateful to all of folks that have already come out to explore our wines and we so look forward to myriad of folks who have yet to visit. Cheers to 2018!
