2019 Tempranillo "RUSTICO"
Tempranillo. Spanish varietal. Beloved by Texas wine connoisseurs. A grape Saint Tryphon never intended to produce. Now one of our most sought-after wines. In 2016 we produced two versions, a wild-fermented version and an inoculated version. In 2018, we followed the 2016 with a wild-fermented version.
All around, 2019 was a challenging year. Some of the longest “hang-times” in Texas wine growing history.
It is a story of a vintage: who picked late and who picked early. Who was nervous and picked before the rains came and who waited and allowed nature to run her course and ripen to the finish line.
The 2019 is a beauty, sleek & sexy, showing all of the verve and meatiness of Tempranillo in its youth, redolent with red plum, dark cherry, dusty with fine Tempranillo tannin that characterizes the varietal in the regions of Ribera del Duero and Toro in Spain, and way fruitier than characterizes the grape in Rioja. It is a decidedly modern version of the varietal. Vinified in open-top fermenters and aged in a mix of neutral barrel and new French oak, the wine’s longevity is anyone’s guess: I project 15-25 years
